Subaru Tech Post! P0457 CEL Problem & Fix

The P0457 CEL (check engine light) isn't actually documented in my 2002 Subaru WRX factory repair manual. Luckily, Google does list it ;)
The problem is "Evaporative Emissions Control System - [Gross] Leak Detected"
...Sounds bad.

The good news is that it's likely one of two things.
1. Your gas cap isn't on tight enough
-Or if you're like me and just installed a new turbo inlet host (Perrin!) it's probably
2. The EVAP purge hose.

Here is what I'm talking about. Look at the blue nozzle that isn't connected to anything. It's down under the intake manifold to the left of the alternator.

The little hose down and to the right of the blue nozzle is supposed to be connected. I must have yanked it off while changing the intake.

The picture below is what it's supposed to look like when the hose is hooked up properly. If you snapped the connector (I didn't) you'll need to buy a new part.

Cheers!

  3. Hey, I had the same code as you. And I looked at the blue nozzle. There's two hoses that connect the blue thing, but is there supposed to be a third hose? Cause I don't see a third hose which is probably my problem. Thanks.

  4. Had same problem: check engine light with code P0457 (shown on Cobb tuning Access Port). Just had recall fixed for fuel leak under intake manifold, so I looked at the vacuum connections and it was one of the other vacuum lines near the blue nipple; the tubing had become old and no longer sealed. Replaced a 1.5" piece of vacuum tubing and used the access port to reset the ECU. So far, no recurrence.

  5. hey quick question...

is this only for the wrx or all imprezas? i have a 2005 2.5rs and im having the same problems...

  6. I'm not sure if it's all Imprezzas or only turbo models. It's easy enough to see if you've got it though as it's at the front left of the intake manifold when you open the engine.

  11. Thank you so much for this post. I've been dealing with this for 2 months thinking it was my gas cap! Low and behold the hose was not connected to the blue nipple.

  13. I own a 2002 Subaru Wrx that I recently purchased a month ago. As soon as I was driving back home after buying it, the p0457 code came on. I had the dealership touble shoot it twice. They even did a smoke leak test. I went online to try and find the cause of the problem myself. I came to this helpful page. Inspection of my EVAP purge solenoid revealed one hose connection and the other one was cut in half. One half was sealed with a screw and the other with a small little cap. Going to get it fixed next Monday. Thanks A lot!!!!

  14. I also had the fuel rail recall done a week or so ago. The car sounded a bit different but after being reassured by the subaru techs it was normal I let it go until I got the CEL. I just went out to check to see if the hose was off and sure enough, it was! I can't wait to get home to plug it back it and see if it fixes me issue! :D

  16. Had this code today after car being on jack stands for months I must have forgotten to put this back together after turbo and injector install. This page made it clear as day what MAY be my problem and sure enough, hose had been knocked off by my gorilla finesse. Thank you!

  17. Thank you so much! Just had this code come up and found this thread (with photos) which saved my time/money! Thanks again from 2015!!

  18. I have had this problem for a while on my 04 wrx. Code still there. All hose on the purge valve under the intake manifold are clamped. The only one I can't get to is the back of the hose under the intake manifold does anyone know where it leads. All lines have been replaced off that purge valve minus that last one. Advice please...

  19. Dead on! Thanks a million! This tutorial saved me hours of painful investigation. Turns out the alternator became loose last month and I did not realize that it probably yanked the hose at the same time. Got small evap leak at first than gross leak...probably did not unplugged all at once.

  20. Does anyone have any really clear pics of where all the hoses connect to from the blue T?

  21. Is this the cause of fuel smell? I had replaced brand new fuel lines and it's still smells. Does anyone have a clue and it only smells when I'm boosting

  22. Hi, I can't find the location of the blue T? Can you post a bigger clear pic?

  23. I broke that peice but never knew it would throw a code. Broke it while changing the power steering pump. What is that part called ?

  25. Thank you for this info! One of the connector was actually snapped and vacuum was leaking from it...

Part number is 22310AC241 in case people need to order the broken part.

  26. My connections were ok but upon checking the purge solenoid revealed it was stuck open and causing a leak, some throttle body cleaner and WD40 and blowing into the input side and cycling the valve with a 12V DC source seems to have free'd the solenoid.

My car had been sitting for over a year before purchase, so a little moisture and corrosion tends to cause faults like this...
